Hanging at the Gym

B's parents own a gym so we did the session there- what a great time it was using all of that space! And, the resulting photos are a great example of the fact that where you shoot really doesn't matter much- could you tell that all around us were tons of weights and equipment? This was a marathon 5-hour session on Halloween day, not for any reason other than that I was having so much fun. T and K did superbly at letting met hang their little one for the 'hammock' shot, which she actually liked once we got her up and hanging! Little B didn't want to miss a beat so, we were surprised when we actually got a lot of sleeping baby pictures- hope you enjoy them!

This little guy is the son of a good friend and he would not cooperate for our photo session at home so we did an 'add-on' session at playgroup the next week. We had big plans for sunny pictures out on the beach while this family was on vacation at the coast... but, alas, it was pouring down rain so we went with umbrellas off the back of the house. They plan on hanging the umbrella picture in their beach house- oh so fitting for the Oregon Coast! We still had a blast with some standard black-backdrop photos and from the looks of the first picture below, the dog had a GREAT time outside!

I was lucky enough to get someone brave enough to have her pregnancy photos done on the beach. She picked an amazing location and, since we started at 7am (yikes) we didn't have much trouble with people watching us. Fun Hunting Butterflies.. and other such things

As you can see from our array of photos we did EVERYTHING at this session with little "N"... First we caught butterflies, then we rounded up some cattle with our hat and cool boots (albeit naked) and, finally, followed up with a little "jester" time, where "N" entertained us with his bells and tricks. It's beginning to (finally) look like spring

Well, we took the opportunity with this brave mama to take some pregnancy photos outdoors and the photos turned out fantastic! I did manage to drop my flash in the water and the first picture is taken right after I tell my wonderful assistant Taylor that if this flash works after having pulled it out of the pond- she gets a bonus.... Well, it fired once and then never again.... or so I thought until I gave it a week to dry out and now it seems to be as good as new! So, thank you SO MUCH wonderful "A" for your outgoing attitude and being willing to do what it took to get the shot. Including, but not limited to, standing in a freezing stream of water, sitting in a freezing stream of water, baring all in a public garden, and dealing with a photographer who just dropped her flash in the water!

4 months old- and still growing

Let me start by saying this: I'm in love with this mama- she should literally get a 'supermama' t-shirt and wear it every day! I can safely say that this was about the third time that a client has made it early to my house for the photo session and this woman did it with twins. In addition to these little cuties; we had their cousins (ages 16 months and 10 weeks), needless to say it was definitely an action-packed morning. Upon commencement of the session there was talk of a glass of wine for all the adults; to which someone replied "glass? I'll take a bottle"... cheers to that! In spite of little miss "no-smiley-pants" we still caught some amazing photos- thanks everyone for a fantastic morning!

I'll be the first to admit that I immediately took a nap after this session- with four adults and two kiddos there was definitely a lot going on! This was such a wonderful, laid-back family and you can tell in the photos! I'm a sucker for these kids too- you've probably seen J and V in other posts, they are my practice models because there mom is always so open to doing an impromptu session here or there! I had a great time and love the photos that came out of our session!

Oh little M you are such an angel! I had lots of fun singing funny songs and telling stories about Kluk-Kluk the chicken; which was all she needed to be happy and sit still. Photography Class- Look What We Did!

I taught a photography class here at my in-home studio this past Sunday. We had a group of 7 eager mamas who were ready to learn some basics about how to put those cameras to good use. Most of us take tons of photos of our kids and out of all of them, we notice that only a few are what we would call really good, quality images. This is was a great class for those busy moms out there who don't have time to take a complete course; and would probably forget half of it in a few months anyway. This concise, 2-hour course, touched on the basics of how a camera works and then gave a number of hints and tricks; everything from what one mode of your camera will optimize your photos to how to hold your little one's attention and get them to actually look right at the camera. At the end we brought in some models; those who had infants practice on our 9-month-old and those with older kiddos practice on our 3-year-olds, here are the results!

Daddy's Girl

This little lady has already formed a close bond with her daddy... she trusts him so much that she decided to pee on him no less than four times in a 10 minute period- sorry Dad! I think little E was quite possibly one of the most laid-back newborns I've ever met. She has the sweetest cry; but I think I only heard it once in the three hours we worked on this photo session. For most of the session she was awake and very alert and; when she wanted to go to sleep, all she needed was for mommy to sit with her, their heads touching before she drifted off peacefully- wow! Teamwork

What I love about newborn sessions is that I get a chance to bond with parents by working together with them to get their new little one settled. This little guy was so sleepy and peaceful to begin with... then he decided he wanted to know what was going on. We had a great time together working through what was a totally typical newborn session (which turns out to be a totally typical newborn day): sleep, eat, pee/poo, cry, sleep, repeat. The only difference is that in the middle of all of this we're putting a naked baby in a sling of tulle and swinging him back and forth- all in a day's work!

I found this amazing gold frame at a local antique dealer and had to snatch it up... Okay, I can't take all of the credit, it was actually my husband who pointed it out. We definitely got our use out of this frame (check out a future blog posting for family photos with this same frame... just haven't gotten to uploading those yet). Thanks so much wonderful "W" family, I had tons of fun with you- it's great to have such an open and out-going couple to work with because we all know that frame isn't light! I also think your effort (and possible slight embarrassment) was worth it for the brick shots, turns out "Steakadelphia" on 60th and Powell is not a bad venue for urban brick photos... and I seriously doubt either of you thought you'd be standing outside on a cold rainy Portland day for pregnancy photos- thanks again!

Behind the Scenes with Assistant Taylor

Taylor and I played around with some different backdrops and lighting ideas the other day after a session. She gets 'paid' by dealing with me and my random ideas... as well as Thatcher who LOVES Taylor and keep asking her to babysit again!

Well, I don't like revealing my secrets but, yes, that is Thatcher holding the hair dryer to get that 'windblown' look on Taylor's hair- you never know when you're going to need an assistant and your toddler never knows that he's gonna help!

Generally 2 month old babies are more difficult to photograph because they've emerged from their newborn slumber and are beginning to realize that they're "not in Kansas anymore"... but not little "M". She was just taking the whole world in with open eyes and remarkable contemplation! When she got tired, she just closed her eyes and went to sleep- what a gem! Thanks for a great afternoon guys!
